The best autism apps for young children to practice skills, speak and plan the day (2026)

The best autism apps for a child aged 2 to 8 depend on the job: skill practice (SuperChild, Otsimo), speech (Speech Blubs, Otsimo Speech Therapy), AAC for a voice (Proloquo2Go, TD Snap, LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat, free Cboard) and visual schedules (Choiceworks). Below are all eleven, plus prices, ratings and limits checked in November 2026.

The short answer

The short answer

Pick the job first. For a voice, choose an AAC app with your speech-language pathologist; Proloquo2Go is the most-rated of the AAC apps here, and Cboard is free. For routines, Choiceworks is a cheap one-time buy. For low-cost parent-led home practice, Otsimo or Speech Blubs. When a behavior analyst or therapist sets the goals and wants every trial recorded, SuperChild is built for that.

Competitor features and prices checked on against their own sites and app store listings (sources at the end).

  • AAC apps give a child a voice and should be chosen with an SLP; prices run from free (Cboard) to $299.99 one-time (LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat).
  • Speech Blubs is the most-reviewed speech app here (4.6 from about 59K App Store ratings) and costs $29.49 to $59.99 a year.
  • Choiceworks covers routines, waiting and feelings for $24.99 once, with Dutch on iOS.
  • Otsimo and Speech Blubs follow the app’s own curriculum; SuperChild follows the targets your child’s professional picks and records every trial.
  • Count active, adult-chosen practice differently from passive watching, and take every skill off the screen afterwards.

Which one fits you?

  • Choose

Proloquo2Go or another AAC app if…

    • Your child needs a way to communicate today, whatever their speech is doing.
    • An SLP has trialed layouts with your child, or you start with free Cboard while you wait.
  • Choose

    Speech Blubs or Otsimo if…

    • You want a low-cost app a parent runs at home, with the app’s own curriculum.
    • The goal is imitation of sounds and first words (Speech Blubs) or broad game-based learning (Otsimo).
  • Choose

    Choiceworks if…

    • Transitions, waiting and routines are the hardest part of the day.
    • You want a one-time $24.99 app with no account, ads or trackers.
  • Choose

    SuperChild if…

    • A behavior analyst, SLT or teacher sets your child’s learning targets, often from the VB-MAPP or ABLLS-R.
    • You want the child to practice those exact targets independently between sessions, with every trial recorded for the professional.

Best autism apps for kids, sorted by the job they do

Autism apps for young children do five different jobs: skill practice (SuperChild, Otsimo), speech (Speech Blubs, Otsimo Speech Therapy), AAC communication (Proloquo2Go, TD Snap, LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat, Cboard), visual schedules (Choiceworks) and assessment for professionals (VB-MAPP App). Compare apps within a job, never across jobs.

A $250 AAC app and a $25 schedule app don’t compete for the same slot in your child’s day, so ranking them against each other helps nobody. Decide the job first, then compare within it.

For each app we checked its own site and US App Store listing for price, rating and limits, and left out claims we couldn’t verify. SuperChild is our product, so read its entry with that in mind.

Not sure which job comes first? Ask your child’s speech-language pathologist (SLP) or behavior analyst. Communication usually leads, because a child who can request and refuse has less reason for frustration. Our guide to AAC for autism explains where to start.

Start with the question your child's team is working on. Many families end up with one AAC app plus one practice app, and paper supports for everything else.

Autism learning apps for skill practice: SuperChild and Otsimo

SuperChild and Otsimo Special Education both let a young child practice learning skills on a tablet on their own. The difference is who sets the goals: in Otsimo the app’s Learning Path does, and in SuperChild the child’s behavior analyst, therapist or teacher picks the targets and sees every trial.

A child learning to match pictures or follow a one-step instruction may need hundreds of tries before the skill is solid. Skill practice apps give those tries without an adult preparing cards each time.

SuperChild (skill practice, professional-led)
The professional chooses targets from 342 ready-made trainings mapped to the VB-MAPP (159) and ABLLS-R (183). The child practices in 5 to 20 minute sessions with an AI coach, and each training runs 10 levels, including 3 generalization levels with new pictures. Every trial is recorded; the dashboard flags stuck and mastered targets. English and Dutch. At Emirsfoundation, 23 children completed 50,194 trials, about 44 times more practice per child than in standard group care (case study). Limits: sold through clinics, schools and independent professionals by demo, with no public price. The child must be able to tap or drag. It does not do AAC, visual schedules, speech-sound work or assessment scoring.
Otsimo Special Education (skill practice, parent-led)
A gamified, ad-free curriculum: 100+ games, a Learning Path that adjusts difficulty, daily and weekly reports, and offline play in premium. iOS and Android. Rated 4.3 from 637 App Store ratings. Price: free download; monthly plans from $9.99 to $20.99, annual $119.99 to $164.99, lifetime $229.99 (several tiers are listed at once). Limits: the curriculum is the app’s own; we found no mapping to the VB-MAPP or ABLLS-R and no clinician dashboard on the pages we checked (as of November 2026). Best for a parent who wants an affordable home learning app.

Apps for autism speech: Speech Blubs and Otsimo Speech Therapy

Speech Blubs is the most-reviewed app for autism speech practice in this roundup, built on video modeling with peer “kid experts” and rated 4.6 from about 59K App Store ratings. Otsimo Speech Therapy uses speech recognition to score pronunciation and is cheaper, but rates 3.4 from 179 ratings.

Speech apps work best when a parent sits with the child and imitates along, because early speech grows out of back-and-forth with a person. If your child isn’t talking yet, read our speech delay guide, and don’t wait for speech before starting AAC.

Speech Blubs
Over 1,500 activities in 28 sections, face filters and rewards, no ads (developer claims), in 14 languages. Its site says ages 1 to 8 and calls it a supplement to therapy. Price: $14.49 a month or $29.49 or $59.99 a year (two annual listings). Limits: focused on speech and first words; its research page shows a therapist rating study and a trial in progress, with no outcome results yet. Some reviews mention billing problems.
Otsimo Speech Therapy
Speech recognition and machine learning to evaluate pronunciation, video modeling and rewards, with a 7-day trial. Price: $6.99 to $14.99 a month, $41.99 to $53.99 a year, $119.99 lifetime. Limits: the lowest rating in this roundup (3.4 from 179), and many price tiers listed at the same time. Best for a family already using Otsimo who wants speech practice in the same brand.

AAC apps for autism, including free AAC apps

The best AAC apps for autism are Proloquo2Go ($249.99, 4.8 from 12K ratings), TD Snap (free download, $9.99 a month to speak), LAMP Words for Life ($299.99), TouchChat HD with WordPower ($299.99) and Cboard, a free open-source web app. Choose with an SLP, who can trial layouts with your child.

An AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) app turns a tablet into a speech-generating device: the child taps symbols or words and the app speaks. It is a communication app for autism, so it belongs with the child all day, everywhere. Research has not found that AAC stops children from learning to speak.

The apps differ mostly in how vocabulary is organized, which matters more than price because a child builds motor memory for where words live. An SLP will usually run a feature-matching trial before you buy.

Proloquo2Go (AssistiveWare)
27,000+ symbols, 100+ voices, 23 layouts from 9 to 144 buttons, switch and keyguard support, and English, Spanish, French and Dutch. iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch; the Mac app is sold separately ($149.99). Price: $249.99 one-time on the US App Store (the vendor page lists $299.99). Limits: Apple only, and no trial observed.
TD Snap (Tobii Dynavox)
Free to download; speech needs a monthly subscription after a 1-month trial ($9.99 a month for the Speaking Upgrade, $4.99 a month each for Gateway, PODD or Metacom vocabularies). 24 languages including Dutch. Rated 4.1 from 879. Limits: the cost never stops while you subscribe.
LAMP Words for Life (PRC-Saltillo)
Built on the LAMP (Language Acquisition through Motor Planning) approach, where each word keeps the same button sequence so the child learns a motor pattern. Price: $299.99 one-time. English, French, German and Spanish. Limits: 3.7 from 95 ratings; works best with an SLP trained in LAMP.
TouchChat HD with WordPower (PRC-Saltillo)
Word-based vocabulary sets with many add-ons (Gateway $149.99, PCS symbols $49.99). Six languages listed, including Spanish and Arabic. Price: $299.99 one-time. Limits: 3.9 from 134 ratings; add-ons raise the total.
Cboard (free)
A free, open-source AAC web app for any browser, also in the app stores. Claims 46 languages; Dutch isn’t named on its site. Limits: offline only in Chrome on desktop and Android. A sensible free start while you wait for an AAC evaluation.

Visual schedule app and assessment app: Choiceworks and VB-MAPP App

Choiceworks is a long-running visual schedule app (since 2012) with picture boards for routines, waiting, choices and feelings for $24.99 one-time, rated 4.6 from 310 ratings. The VB-MAPP App is for professionals: it scores the VB-MAPP for $21.99 a year per learner.

A visual schedule shows what happens now and next in pictures. An assessment app is for the professional choosing targets.

Choiceworks (Bee Visual)
Routine, waiting, choice and feelings boards. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Mac, Android and Chromebooks. Seven languages on iOS including Dutch; English and Spanish on Android. No ads, trackers or account. Price: $24.99 one-time, no subscription. Limits: it structures the day and does not teach or track skills (no trial data observed). Choiceworks Calendar is a separate app.
VB-MAPP App (Data Makes the Difference)
The official digital VB-MAPP, built with Dr. Mark Sundberg. Item-level scoring criteria, automatic charting, IEP reports and AI-suggested IEP goals. iPhone, iPad, Mac and web. Price: $21.99 a year per learner; volume packs in the App Store. Limits: it assesses and plans; we found no child-facing practice on its site or listing (November 2026). Rated 3.7 from 17. Professionals who want the targets practiced afterwards can read VB-MAPP App alternatives or try our free VB-MAPP goal mapper.

What autism apps cost: one-time vs subscription

Among the best autism apps, AAC apps are the biggest one-time cost ($249.99 to $299.99, or free with Cboard), Choiceworks is $24.99 once, and the practice and speech apps are subscriptions from about $30 to $165 a year. SuperChild has no public price and is quoted per learner after a demo.

A one-time price looks high next to a $9.99 monthly plan, but over three years Proloquo2Go at $249.99 costs less than most annual subscriptions here. Subscriptions are easier to stop, which suits apps a child may outgrow.

US App Store prices checked on November 7, 2026; dark bars show the range when several prices are listed at once. Scale: $0 to $300. In-app add-ons are left out. SuperChild has no public price: it is priced per learner, with a quote after a demo.

How to choose an app for your autistic child

Choose an autism app by asking six questions: is the screen time active, who sets the goals, what data can you show the therapist, how is it priced, does it work offline, and is it in your child’s language. An app that answers well on goals and data will fit into therapy instead of competing with it.

Use this checklist in the App Store, then ask your child’s team before you buy anything over $50.

  1. 1Active or passive screen time?Active apps ask the child to respond. Passive apps play at the child. Short, active sessions an adult chooses and ends count differently from watching videos.
  2. 2Who sets the goals? In most consumer apps the app decides. If your child has a behavior analyst, SLT or IEP team, an app that follows their targets keeps home practice aligned with therapy.
  3. 3What data can you show the therapist?A star count tells you little. Accuracy per target, number of trials and which skills are stuck tell a professional what to change.
  4. 4How is it priced?One-time, subscription or per learner through a provider. Count the add-ons too.
  5. 5Does it work offline?Otsimo lists offline play in premium; Cboard works offline only in Chrome on desktop and Android. AAC must work everywhere, so test it in airplane mode.
  6. 6Is it in your child’s language?Dutch is available in Proloquo2Go, TD Snap, Choiceworks (iOS) and SuperChild’s learner activities. Use the language spoken at home.

How to practice away from the screen

Repeat every app skill with real objects, other people and new places, which behavior analysts call generalization. Printed schedules, first-then boards and token boards cover most of the day without a screen.

After a block of matching animals on a tablet, match toy animals at the table, then find the dog in a picture book, then point out a real dog on a walk. Same target, three new forms: that is how you know the skill is learned. Behavior analysts build these steps into every program.

Free printables do much of the non-screen work: a first-then board for transitions, a token board for motivation, a visual schedule for the day and matching and listening activities from our free printables library. For parents who want a plan, our page for parents shows how a professional-led home program fits around family life.

Generalization is the goal: the same skill with new materials, new people and new places.

Where SuperChild fits

Where SuperChild fits among autism apps

SuperChild is the skill-practice app here built for the professional as much as the child. A behavior analyst, SLT or teacher picks targets mapped to the VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R, the child practices them independently, and every trial is recorded. The adult keeps every clinical decision.

It is sold through clinics, schools and independent professionals rather than as an App Store download, and pricing is per learner with a quote after a demo. Data is hosted in the EU, and SuperChild is GDPR and HIPAA compliant and certified to ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 (security).

It is the wrong pick for a voice (choose AAC), routines (Choiceworks) or speech sounds, or for a child who can’t yet tap a screen. Professionals can see the clinic side on for professionals, or request a demo with one learner’s goals.

FAQ

Questions people ask before choosing

What is the best app for autistic children?
It depends on the job. For communication, an AAC app such as Proloquo2Go, TD Snap, LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat or the free Cboard, chosen with an SLP. For routines, Choiceworks. For parent-led home learning, Otsimo or Speech Blubs. For practice of targets a professional sets, with every trial recorded, SuperChild.
Are there free AAC apps for autism?
Yes. Cboard is a free, open-source AAC web app that runs in a browser and is also in the app stores. TD Snap is free to download, but speech needs a subscription of $9.99 a month after a 1-month trial.
Is Proloquo2Go worth $249.99?
For a child who will use AAC daily on an iPad or iPhone, often yes: it is the most-rated AAC app in this roundup (4.8 from about 12K ratings) and a one-time purchase. It is Apple only, so ask your SLP to trial it first.
Is Speech Blubs good for autistic children?
Speech Blubs can help children who are starting to imitate sounds and words, especially with a parent playing along. It does not replace speech therapy, and a child who is not yet speaking may need AAC too.
How much screen time is OK for an autistic child using learning apps?
The WHO advises no more than 1 hour of sedentary screen time a day for ages 2 to 4. Keep app practice short and active, stay nearby, and repeat each skill away from the screen. An AAC app is your child’s voice and should not count toward screen-time limits.
Can parents buy SuperChild directly?
SuperChild is mainly used through clinics, schools and independent professionals who set the targets. It has no public price; a family or professional can request a demo and receive a quote per learner.
