VB-MAPP App alternatives: score the assessment, then practice the targets

The VB-MAPP App is the official digital VB-MAPP, built with Dr. Mark Sundberg, and it is the right tool for administering, scoring and charting the assessment. Many people searching for a VB-MAPP app also want something the child can practice with once the targets are chosen. SuperChild covers that second job with 159 VB-MAPP-mapped trainings, and every trial is recorded for the behavior analyst.

The short answer

The short answer

Keep the VB-MAPP App, or the VB-MAPP inside your ABA platform, for the assessment itself. Add SuperChild when the gap is practice volume on the milestones you picked, because the child runs short tablet sessions on those targets and every trial reaches your dashboard. Most teams that need both will use both.

Competitor features and prices checked on against their own sites and app store listings (sources at the end).

  • The VB-MAPP App is the only authorized digital VB-MAPP and costs $21.99 a year per learner on its homepage.
  • Its job is assessment: item guidance, scoring, automatic charting, IEP reports and AI-suggested IEP goals.
  • Child-facing practice activities are not listed on its homepage or App Store page (as of November 2026).
  • SuperChild does not score the VB-MAPP. It turns the targets you choose into daily practice with trial-by-trial data.
  • A workable cycle: assess in the VB-MAPP App, pick targets, practice in SuperChild, re-assess.

What the VB-MAPP App does well

The VB-MAPP App is the official, authorized digital version of the VB-MAPP, built in collaboration with Dr. Mark Sundberg. It walks the assessor through each milestone, scores and charts the results automatically, and produces IEP reports, for $21.99 a year per learner.

The VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program) is a published, criterion-referenced assessment by Mark Sundberg, sold in print by AVB Press. It covers 170 milestones across 3 developmental levels, 24 learning and language barriers and 18 transition skills. The VB-MAPP App is the digital version of that protocol, made by Data Makes the Difference, LLC, and it calls itself "the only authorized digital VB-MAPP."

For the assessment itself it is hard to beat. Each item shows the objective, materials, examples and scoring criteria, which helps newer assessors score consistently. Scores are plotted on the familiar milestone grid without hand charting, and forms export for reports. The homepage adds AI features that generate IEP goals, point out skill gaps and answer follow-up questions, plus analytics that flag plateaus or regressions between assessments.

Price is low and public. The homepage lists $21.99 a year per learner, including assessments, automatic charting, IEP reports and free training. The App Store sells packs of 1, 3, 10 and 25 learners, which brings the per-learner cost down to about $16 at 25. An "Org Plus" tier adds more reports, with no public price. The homepage also mentions bulk and country-based discounts and free licenses for university students and for educators in developing regions.

Two smaller points. The App Store rating is 3.7 out of 5 from 17 ratings, a small sample. And an older AVB Press FAQ describes the electronic version as having no recurring fee, which no longer matches the current homepage, so check the live price before you budget.

  • Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision (iOS 17 or later), plus a web login.
  • Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic and French on the homepage.
  • Training: self-paced assessor courses, and a Training Library and ABA 101 course sold in the app.

A VB-MAPP app for scoring, or a VB-MAPP app for practice?

An assessment app like the VB-MAPP App tells you where a learner is on the 170 milestones, a few times a year. A practice app like SuperChild gives the learner hundreds of trials on the milestones you chose, every week, and records each one.

Searches for "VB-MAPP app" mix two different needs. A behavior analyst preparing an initial assessment or a six-month reassessment wants the scoring tool. A parent, teacher or analyst who already has the scores often wants an app the child can use to work on the targets. AI assistants asked for the "best app to run VB-MAPP based programs" tend to name the VB-MAPP App, which is correct for the assessment step.

The data looks different, too. Assessment data is a milestone score of 0, ½ or 1, collected when a trained assessor runs the protocol. Practice data is trial by trial: which instruction, which response, correct or not, at what level of the training. You need the first to decide what to teach and the second to know whether the teaching is happening often enough to work.

Child-facing practice activities are not listed on the VB-MAPP App homepage or App Store page (as of November 2026), though the listing does include a curriculum guide and suggested IEP goals. The teaching that follows the assessment is planned by the analyst and run by people at the table, in natural environment teaching and at home.

Drawn generically. An assessment app holds milestone scores (0, ½ or 1 per milestone) gathered a few times a year. A practice app holds trial-by-trial responses gathered every day. Both are useful, and they answer different questions.

VB-MAPP software and online options compared

Besides the VB-MAPP App, teams run the VB-MAPP through their ABA data platform (CentralReach, Rethink or Ensora, which license it from the VB-MAPP App), or on the paper protocol with a free goal mapper. SuperChild sits after all of them, as the practice step.

If you are looking for VB-MAPP online, start by checking what you already pay for. The VB-MAPP App homepage names CentralReach, Ensora Health and Rethink as licensed reseller partners that access the VB-MAPP through it. A clinic on one of those platforms may be able to score the VB-MAPP inside the system that already holds its session data, so ask your account manager how it is set up on your plan.

Ensora ABA Data Collection (formerly Catalyst by DataFinch)
Built for RBTs and analysts recording in-person sessions. A 2022 Therapy Brands and DataMTD announcement says the VB-MAPP assessment is fully integrated with Catalyst, and the product now sits in Ensora Health’s ABA Suite. Strong choice when the assessment should live next to daily DTT data. We could not confirm a public price on Ensora’s live pages.
CentralReach
A full practice management, billing and clinical data platform for ABA and IDD care, and one of the VB-MAPP App’s named reseller partners. Choose it for the whole clinic system. Pricing is not public. See our CentralReach comparison for how SuperChild sits next to it.
Paper protocol and the free goal mapper
The printed VB-MAPP Guide and Protocol from AVB Press still works, and many assessors keep a paper copy for the file. Pair it with our free VB-MAPP goal mapper, which turns milestone levels into goal ideas and activities, and plain ABA data sheets for the teaching.
SuperChild
Does not administer or score the VB-MAPP. The analyst assigns targets from 159 VB-MAPP-mapped trainings, the child practices them in 5 to 20 minute tablet sessions, and every trial is recorded on the clinician dashboard. It works alongside any of the options above.

How to use the VB-MAPP App and SuperChild together

Assess in the VB-MAPP App, choose the next milestones, assign the matching SuperChild trainings, let the child practice daily, then re-assess in the VB-MAPP App and compare. Each tool does the step it was built for.

This is the cycle we see work for clinics, schools and home programs. The analyst keeps every clinical decision, and the practice in between runs at a volume that is hard to reach with people alone.

  1. 1Assess in the VB-MAPP AppRun the milestones, barriers and transition assessment as usual. Note the domains where the learner is emerging, for example Listener Responding at Level 2 or VP-MTS milestones 6 to 8.
  2. 2Pick the targetsChoose the next milestones to teach and write the goals. The VB-MAPP App’s suggested IEP goals or our IEP goals guide can help with wording.
  3. 3Assign the matching trainings in SuperChildOpen the VB-MAPP library, find the trainings mapped to those milestones and assign them to the learner. Each training has 10 levels: 6 teaching levels, 3 generalization levels with new exemplars and 1 assessment level.
  4. 4Practice daily, review weeklyThe child practices in short sessions in the clinic, at school or at home, with an adult nearby. You review accuracy, stuck targets and mastered targets on the dashboard and adjust the plan.
  5. 5Generalize away from the screenTablet mastery is one step toward the milestone. The team carries each skill into table-time, natural environment teaching and daily routines with new people and materials.
  6. 6Re-assess in the VB-MAPP AppAt the next reassessment, score the milestones again and compare the grids. The practice data helps explain why a domain moved or stalled.

How VB-MAPP milestones map to SuperChild trainings

Each of SuperChild’s 159 VB-MAPP trainings is built from a specific VB-MAPP milestone range, grouped by domain: for instance Listener Responding Level 2 milestones 6 to 7 map to field-of-six listener trainings.

The library covers every VB-MAPP domain a learner can practice on a tablet: 14 mand, 22 tact, 21 listener responding, 12 LRFFC, 7 intraverbal, 14 VP-MTS and 2 same-and-different trainings, plus independent play, social, motor imitation, classroom routines, linguistic structure, reading, writing and math. The full list, grouped by domain, is on the VB-MAPP page.

Listener responding and VP-MTS fit a tablet naturally, because the response is a selection: touch the named picture, or drag the picture to its match. Other domains need an honest note. VB-MAPP mands, tacts and intraverbals are vocal or signed responses, so on the tablet they are practiced as selection-based steps (picture completion, request boards, picture-to-spoken-word matching), and the vocal response is still taught and scored by the team. That is also why SuperChild records practice trials and leaves VB-MAPP scoring to the assessor.

If you use the ABLLS-R instead, the same approach applies with 183 ABLLS-R trainings.

Four rows from the SuperChild VB-MAPP library. The intraverbal domain starts at Level 2 in the VB-MAPP, so there is no Level 1 intraverbal row. On the tablet, intraverbal fill-ins are practiced by picture completion; the vocal response is still taught with the team.

When SuperChild is the wrong choice

If you need to administer or score the VB-MAPP, use the VB-MAPP App, your platform’s VB-MAPP or the paper protocol. SuperChild is also a poor fit for learners who cannot yet tap or select on a screen.

Be clear about the job before you buy anything. SuperChild’s job is practice. Scoring the VB-MAPP, writing programs, in-person DTT data capture by an RBT, billing and scheduling belong to the tools above, and communication and routines belong to AAC and visual schedule tools. If your gap is one of those, spend there first.

Some learners are not ready for tablet practice yet: those who cannot yet scan a field of pictures and tap one, or whose early mand and echoic work needs an adult in the moment. Start them with the team and bring in tablet practice when selection responses are in place. Older learners working on daily living skills that cannot be practiced on a screen are better served by an assessment like the AFLS and in-person teaching.

Where SuperChild does fit, the evidence is about volume. At Emirsfoundation, a Dutch youth-care provider, 23 children completed 50,194 learning trials, about 44 times more practice per child than in standard group care, with the same staff. The case study has the details.

Where SuperChild fits

Where SuperChild fits after the VB-MAPP

SuperChild is for the weeks between assessments. The behavior analyst, speech-language pathologist, teacher or parent picks targets from 159 VB-MAPP-mapped trainings, and the child practices them independently on a tablet in 5 to 20 minute sessions with an AI coach: one instruction, a small field of choices, immediate feedback. Every trial is recorded automatically, and the clinician dashboard shows accuracy, stuck targets and mastered targets per learner.

It runs next to the VB-MAPP App and next to your ABA platform. Data is hosted in the EU, and SuperChild is GDPR and HIPAA compliant and certified to ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 (details on the security page). Learner activities run in English and Dutch. See how it works, or read what it looks like for professionals and parents. Pricing is per learner; request a demo for a quote.

FAQ

Questions people ask before choosing

Is there an official VB-MAPP app?
Yes. The VB-MAPP App by Data Makes the Difference, LLC is the only authorized digital VB-MAPP and was built in collaboration with Dr. Mark Sundberg, the author of the assessment. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, with a web login.
How much does the VB-MAPP App cost?
As of November 2026 the homepage lists 21.99 dollars a year per learner, including assessments, automatic charting, IEP reports and training. The App Store sells packs of 3, 10 and 25 learners for 53.99, 169.99 and 399.99 dollars a year. Org Plus pricing is not public. An older AVB Press FAQ mentions no recurring fee, so check the current price on the VB-MAPP App site.
Can I do the VB-MAPP online?
Yes. The VB-MAPP App has a web login as well as the Apple apps, and CentralReach, Ensora Health and Rethink are listed as reseller partners that offer the VB-MAPP through it. Ask your platform vendor whether it is included on your plan.
Does SuperChild score the VB-MAPP?
No. SuperChild does not administer or score the VB-MAPP. It provides 159 practice trainings mapped to VB-MAPP milestones, records every practice trial, and shows mastery per training. Use the VB-MAPP App, your ABA platform or the paper protocol for the assessment.
Is there an app that teaches the VB-MAPP targets to the child?
SuperChild is built for that step. The professional assigns trainings mapped to the chosen VB-MAPP milestones, and the child practices them independently in short tablet sessions. Vocal responses such as mands, tacts and intraverbals are still taught by the team, because a tablet practices them through selection.
Can I use the VB-MAPP App and SuperChild together?
Yes, and that is the most common setup we expect. Assess and re-assess in the VB-MAPP App, assign the matching SuperChild trainings in between, and use the practice data to explain why a domain moved or stalled at the next reassessment.
Who publishes the VB-MAPP?
The VB-MAPP was written by Mark Sundberg, PhD, BCBA-D, and the print Guide and Protocol are published by AVB Press. The VB-MAPP App is the authorized digital version.
